A while ago, a friend who used to live in U.S. complained that she had nearly ZERO public transport where she stayed, and without a car it was impossible to get alone.

Private bus companies did run an occasional service, but tickets were expensive and service terrible.

My friend had a baby there. There was no paid maternity leave or child support.

Public service was at times dismal - bureaucracy and red tape got in the way of healthcare, funding, and getting a lot of things done.

It made me very sad to hear all this. Linkspam on how America can be backwards compared to other countries - and it's not because I'm comparing it with Europe. So many parts of Asia too is way ahead already on this matter.

And yet America operates as if it's the number 1 superpower in the world.

Agree with this one - manners of folks. (I've had a lot of this with customer service and trying to get help in US. Add it to the fact that many Americans i've run into just don't know much about the world outside of America. More education is needed.

“Once upon a time, powerful wizard, who wanted to destroy an entire kingdom, placed a magic potion in the well from which the inhabitants drank. Whoever drank that water would go mad.

The following morning, the whole population drank from the well and they all went mad, apart from the king and his family, who had a well set aside for them alone, which the magician had not managed to poison. The king was worried and tried to control the population by issuing a series of edicts governing security and public health. The policemen and the inspectors, however, had also drunk the poisoned water, and they thought the king’s decisions were absurd and resolved to take notice of them.

When the inhabitants of the kingdom heard these decrees, they became convinced that the king had gone mad and was now giving nonsensical orders. The marched on the castle and called for his abdication.

In despair the king prepared to step down from the throne, but the queen stopped him, saying: ‘Let us go and drink from the communal well. Then we will be the same as them.’

And that was what they did: The king and queen drank the water of madness and immediately began talking nonsense. Their subjects repented at once; now that the king was displaying such ‘wisdom’, why not allow him to rule the country?

The country continued to live in peace, although its inhabitants behaved very differently from those of its neighbors. And the king was able to govern until the end of his days.”

"Someone once told me this: Love is a rubber band. It can either be stretched to its limit so that it can hold the most number of things, or it can be stretched till it breaks. If you stretch till it breaks, it means that the relationship will not last. The one who stretches the rubber band is reality. No matter how much two lovers love each other, reality will stretch that love. Whether it holds or breaks doesn't just depend on how strong the love is. It depends on how aggressively reality is stretching as well."

"Have you broken a rubber band before?"

"Who hasn't?"

Redemption

Friday, October 18th, 2013 09:19

Every semester, I have to supervise interns for end-of-term projects. So far, there's been a huge variation in the quality of projects delivered - most were okay-ish, a few were stellar, and some were borderline passes.

This semester, I've got two interns who, sadly, have zero motivation, are on the verge of giving up, and have made the huge mistake of picking the most difficult topic imaginable simply because they "liked it".

Taking this matter to God...

Me: Father, this is such a BAD idea. I don't want them to screw up.

God: My child, you have to let them make this mistake.

Me: Eh???

God: They will learn only if they fail. You have to give them the permission to fail.

Me: *pauses a while* But... I don't want to.

God:
My child, everyday, MILLIONS of my children make the wrong choices. I do not condemn them. I promise however, to fully redeem them.

Me: *is quiet*  I understand... I've been redeemed, too.

God: I will always operate in love, and will take you in no matter how defiled, messed up, or sinful you are (or you THINK you are), and I will restore you even BEFORE you've sorted yourself out. I am always ready to welcome you, and I am always with you. Simply because you are my child and I love you...

I Look to You

Tuesday, October 8th, 2013 16:12

This song always comforts when I'm feeling down. Been listening to it quite frequently these days; it's a reminder that man's weakness is the beginning of God's strength.

The original song was sung by Whitney Houston:

On Youtube, I've found two versions - Houston's is classical, but I felt more drawn to another more modern version by Selah. Am sharing both of them here :)

Original by Houston: www.youtube.com/watch
Version by Selah: www.youtube.com/watch (Note: this version comes with an amazing testimony. Skip to 3:38 for music)

"I Look To You"

As I lay me down,
Heaven hear me now.
I'm lost without a cause
After giving it my all.

Winter storms have come
And darkened my sun.
After all that I've been through
Who on earth can I turn to?

I look to you.
I look to you.
After all my strength is gone,
In you I can be strong
I look to you.
I look to you.
And when melodies are gone,
In you I hear a song.
I look to you.

About to lose my breathe,
There's no more fighting left,
Sinking to rise no more,
Searching for that open door.

And every road that I've taken
Lead to my regret.
And I don't know if I'm going to make it.
Nothing to do but lift my head

I look to you.
I look to you.
After all my strength is gone,
In you I can be strong
I look to you.
I look to you.
And when melodies are gone,
In you I hear a song.
I look to you.

My levees are broken
My walls have come
Tumbling down on me

The rain is falling.
Defeat is calling.
I need you to set me free.

Take me far away from the battle.
I need you.
Shine on me.

I look to you.
I look to you.
After all my strength is gone,
In you I can be strong
I look to you.
I look to you.
And when melodies are gone,
In you I hear a song.
I look to you.

When I was a teenager, when I loved, I loved really, really hard.

And Loved unabashedly.

Adulthood has somehow eroded this precious quality. Mainly because loving so hard ultimately bit me back real hard, got me hurt real bad, and destroyed the heart to the point of near-irrevocable damage.

Recently, I had a life-changing experience with God, as well as a revelation of what it means to truly posses the Father's love. He's healing the heart, and I am claiming onto his promises that he will fully restore all that's lost.

Because I hope to love in that unabashedly hard manner again.

And I *KNOW* I will be able to love unreservedly like that again.

For now, here's an article on why teenage girls, who haven't lost this precious state, are so worth loving..

http://spinals.tumblr.com/post/62127822802/why-i-fucking-love-teenage-girls-a-personal-essay-from

 I love this quote:

"You know those girls everyone loves to shit all over? The ones who really fucking love something? Those girls, man. They take all that energy, all that circulating fire in their veins, and instead of letting it destroy them, they choose to love, ferociously. Be it a band, or a book, or a series of films. They do it to keep themselves sane, and yet we mock them for it. Teenage girls find a buoy for themselves in the sea of emotional ruin, and they hold on tighter than anyone else...."

Even so many years after its release (and a 3D release), the Titanic movie still remains one of the most re-watched movies of all times (according to my students, at least).

For the most part, those I've encountered tend to remember Titanic as either

(i) a sappy Romance that crosses all social and economical boundaries, completed with memories that transcend time, OR
(ii) a reminder of Maritime and Boat safety regulations.

Few knew, however, that director James Cameron, saw the Titanic as a metaphor for climate change:

"There’s something about the Titanic. For me, it’s so much more than just simply an exercise in forensic archaeology. Part of the Titanic parable is of arrogance, of hubris, of the sense we’re too big to fail. Well where have we heard that one before? [Video of a sea of burning oil platforms] There was this big machine, this human system that was pushing forward with so much momentum that it couldn’t turn and couldn’t stop in time to avert the disaster. And that’s what we have right now! But in that human system, on board that ship, if you want to make it a microcosm of the world, you have different classes, you know you have first class, second class, third class. Well in our world right now you’ve got developed nations and undeveloped nations. You’ve got the starving millions who are going to be the ones the most affected by the next iceberg that we hit. Which is going to be climate change. We can see that iceberg ahead of us right now but we can’t turn. We can’t turn because of the momentum of the system – the political momentum, the business momentum. There are too many people making money out of the system. The way the system works right now, those people who frankly have their hands on the levers of power aren’t ready to let them go. And until they do, we aren’t going to be able to turn and miss that iceberg we’re going to hit. When we hit it, the rich are still going to be able to get their access to food, to arable land, to water and so on. It’s going to be the poor, it’s going to be the steerage, that are going to be impacted. It was the same with the Titanic. I think that’s why this story was always fascinating. Because it’s a perfect little encapsulation of the world and the whole social spectrum. But until our lives are really put at risk, the moment of truth, we don’t know what we would do. And that’s my final word."

Source: http://montreal2012.wordpress.com/2012/04/16/james-cameron-the-titanic-as-a-metaphor-for-climate-crisis/

Another metaphor for Titanic comes in its final analysis: Eternal Distinction

Titanic is a movie of distinctions. The Rich vs Poor; tea-drinkers who hold delicate teacups compared to lower-decked beer-slurping thugs. The Educated vs Simple; of classically-entertained folk contrasting against roguish games. The Famous and the Unknown. The Upper Deck vs The Lower Deck.

Yet after the Titanic sank, at a time when people were scrambling for news of the ship that crashed on its maiden voyage, the newspapers only published two columns: those who were Saved, and, those who were Lost.

It reminds me of Jesus Christ.

In eternal distinction, EVERYTHING - class, education, entertainment, associations - starkly pales in comparison to whether one Made it or Didn't. Human presumption of all that matters cannot replace our worth and value in the eyes of God.

Titanic is then, a metaphor for the inevitability of death, and we are all on the Titanic.

All things of this world will eventually fade, but we have a high priest in heaven - Jesus Christ - who loves us - regardless of our looks, money, background, achievements (or lack of them), our past, our mistakes, and any future mishaps we may have. Jesus Christ came to demonstrate that God is for us, and not against us (Romans 8:31), and that there is nothing, NOTHING, that can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39).

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."  -  John 3: 16-17

A pair of jeans that I've worn way too much over the past 3 years finally gave way to giant holes in the crotch and butt area.

What to do with old jeans?

I'm a big fan of recycling and upcycling (and cycling itself). It's been long known that jeans are awesome for making bags:

Or phone covers:

BUT these aren't the only things jeans can become.

So, I shall reincarnate my jeans into something else...

The possibilities:

1) For avid readers: Book Covers

Durable and unique, with a totally useful pocket!  :D

(For more stunningly eye-catching book covers, see: http://www.pinterest.com/delia15/diy-book-covers-journals/)

2) For a more visually appealing dining experience: Denim Coasters and Placemats <3 <3

4) For those who need craft supplies: Decorative jean spirals:

which can be made into stuff like this:

5) For adding a touch of colour to furniture: Cushion Covers!

(Source: google images. Google 'jeans cushion cover')

I actually made a cushion cover out of jeans' material before. So cute and easy to wash!

6) For those who really need to organize their mail: Jeans' letter holders

7) For those with too much time on their hands: Denim patched carpet

(I must say, that THIS looks damn impressive!)

(source: http://www.gasjeans.com/en/blog/eco-friendly-denim-carpet/)

And finally...

8) For the extremely talented one who sews: Denim ballgowns

(I would love one of these. Ahahaha)

As a child, Whitney Houston was my best-loved singer.

Whitney was a testament that true singers had a gift with the voice. She didn't need backup dancers, sexual innuendo, nudity, or the sound-effect frills that plague too many modern tunes these days. I felt great sorrow when she passed on on Feb 11, 2012.

Her voice will always be loved and remembered by many.

My favourite was the ballad, Didn't we almost have it all.

Touching and deeply soulful, Whitney's voice belted out lyrics describing a love that was once pure and now gone. 12 years ago, soon after I broke up with my first love, I listened to it continuously for nearly a year (and on-and-off).

The song still touches me today. It's a classic that I'll always return to.

Watch youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfSTqtv1dc8

Remember when we held on in the rain
The nights we almost lost it
Once again we can take the night into tomorrow
Living on feelings
Touching you I feel it all again

Chorus:
Didn't we almost have it all
When love was all we had worth giving?
The ride with you was worth the fall my friend
Loving you makes life worth living
Didn't we almost have it all
The nights we held on till the morning
You know you'll never love that way again
Didn't we almost have it all

The way you used to touch me felt so fine
We kept our hearts together down the line
A moment in the soul can last forever
Comfort and keep us
Help me bring the feeling back again

(Chorus)

Bridge
Didn't we have the best of times
when love was young and new
couldn't we reach inside and find
the love of me and you
we'll never lose it again
cause once you know what love is you'll never let it end

Chorus:
Didn't we almost have it all
The night we held on till the morning
You know you'll never love that way again
Didn't we almost have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
(End)

It's a real touching song. Love the soulful tune.

Anywhere you are, I am near
Anywhere you go, I'll be there
Anytime you whisper my name
You'll see

How every single promise I'll keep
'Cause what kind of guy would I be
If I was to leave
When you need me most?

What are words
If you really don't mean them when you say them?
What are words
If they're only for good times, then they don't?

When it's love
Yeah, you say them out loud
Those words, they never go away
They live on, even when we're gone

And I know an angel was sent
Just for me and I know I'm meant
To be where I am
And I'm gonna be

Standing right beside her tonight
And I'm gonna be by your side
I would never leave
When she needs me most

What are words
If you really don't mean them when you say them?
What are words
If they're only for good times, then they don't?

When it's love
Yeah, you say them out loud
Those words, they never go away
They live on, even when we're gone

Anywhere you are, I am near
Anywhere you go, I'll be there
And I'm gonna be here
Forever more

Every single promise I keep
'Cause what kind of guy would I be
If I was to leave
When you need me most?

I'm forever keeping my angel close...

"The devil wants you to be looking at you. When you feel guilty, you're looking at yourself. When you look at yourself, you'll see shortcomings and ugliness. But God sees us in Christ, and in His eyes, we are holy, righteous, and full of glory. Don't focus on yourself. Keep your focus on Christ." - Pastor Joseph Prince

I don't usually write about the bible, but today I felt compelled to do so. I read a Solid Rock magazine today and one of the articles really caught my attention. The message, preached by Pastor Joseph Prince, is worth sharing.

"For the law was taught through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." -- John 1:17

According to the article, God's grace came through Christ's sacrifice on the cross and believers should no longer be living in guilt and condemnation. There is nothing wrong with the law - the law is holy, but it can't make us holy. The law is righteous, but it can't make us righteous.

Therefore, only grace, not law, can cause people to be holy. Under the law, you have broken all of God's commandments when you break one. Under grace - believing ONE thing - that you are righteous because of the blood of Jesus christ - allows Jesus to become OUR righteousness. The covering of Jesus' blood lets God see us the way he sees Jesus - complete, unblemished, holy, and loved just as God loved his precious son.

The article did cautioned that living under grace, however, is no excuse to sin. He explained that the law brings unrest; people abide by the rules because of the rules. But for those who rest under grace, they can walk with God and will want to do what is right because they have received His love. Only grace itself, can transform the heart.

Pastor Joseph Prince shared that he used to preach law and sin until God showed him a revelation in the Bible. He found that the children of Israel lived under pure grace in their journey from Egypt to Mt Sinai. They kept complaining but God never punished them. However, when they chose self-righteousness at the foot of Mount Sinai by saying, "All that the Lord says we can do," (Exodus 19:8) God let them live under the law since they asked for it. And because they placed themselves under the law and were unholy, God had to keep a distance and punish them from that time on whenever they complained.

In the bible, there were only two persons - the Roman centurion and the Canaanite woman - whom Jesus said had "great faith". Pastor Prince enquired why this was so, and God revealed that it's because they were both Gentiles. Gentiles, during those days, were not under the law. Therefore, they were not under condemnation and did not disqualify themselves from receiving. Instead, they were conscious of the grace of Jesus Christ.

It is important to note that law and grace CANNOT be mixed. Many preachers do try to balance the presentation of grace and law. But, what man calls "balance", Jesus calls "mixture". Jesus himself once said that the new wine of grace cannot be put into the old wineskin of law, because you will lose both. It is either being completely under law or under grace.

"Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more" - Romans 5:20

The main takeaway, I feel, is to understand what EXACTLY is Grace. Grace is the UNEARNED, UNMERITED, and UNDESERVED favour of God. We do not receive it by trying to be deserving of it, by our own works and effort. We receive it simply by believing that Jesus died for our sins. God hates sin as it destroys lives and relationships, but sin is not overcome by our own works or relying on our willpower to overcome it. The devil will constantly remind us, "You still EXPECT God's blessing after you messed up again?" This is when we must remind ourselves that Christ alone, is our perfection and righteousness. None of us are without faults, and none of us infallible humans are qualified for God's blessing by our own merit. That is WHY we plead the grace of God - which is again, which is the unearned, unmerited, and deeply, deeply, undeserving love of the Father towards us.

Something to think about.

"My beloved child,

It breaks my heart when you doubt what you are worth. I paid the ultimate price to prove to you how valuable you are, and I have loved you with my life. Whenever you feel insecure about who you are, look to the cross.

Nothing you could say or ever do in this life will change the way I feel for you. You are such a treasure to Me and I gave my life - to free you from the power of sin and bondage - and allow you to live life to the fullest. Remember the cross, my love, and you will never again doubt your self-worth..."

"I'm here. I love you. I don't care if you need to stay up crying all night long, I will stay with you. If you need the medication again, go ahead and take it -- I will love you through that, as well. If you don't need the medication, I will love you, too. There's nothing you can ever do to lose my love. I will protect you until you die, and after your death I will still  protect you. I am stronger than Depression and I am braver than Loneliness and nothing will ever exhaust me"

I have been feeling suicidal for many, many, months.

Crying the self to sleep almost daily. Eating habits out of whack. In the past two years I've lost a lot of weight, and then gained it back in the most demoralizing fashion. Work is thoroughly exhausting; am almost not coping. Some mornings I wake up, and it's like there's no reason to live anymore.

(I don't think I will actually die, but the depression's overwhelming.

I am a teacher now. Everyday I deal with the kids - their problems, their issues, their families. I hear them out, encourage them, help them in school, and tell them how they've got so much to give. We counsel people, inspire them, show them the things of the world. But as Teachers, we're not allowed to be depressed. We're not allowed to be weak. We're not allowed to fail or falter. Not allowed to complain how hard it is. We must always be strong, always be others' pillar of support, always be willing to give ourselves to others who're troubled and in need. But who will look after us when we are down or depressed?

No one.

I can't tell anyone the truth.

I can't verbalize the pain. I can't tell my colleagues, my family, my friends. I've hinted to my BFF that I feel like dying on gchat, and i mostly receive 'awwws' and 'hugs' in a slightly comforting manner. Yet the trap of my deranged mind prevails. The paralysis is awful.

There is nothing that hurts you so much as your secrets.

Sometimes it feels like I can just die alone in my apartment and no one would notice. My work would just hire another person. My father or brothers wouldn't give much of a damn. My mother never loved me anyway, so she wouldn't give two hoots if i were dead or alive.

I've asked God to bring me out. He's assured me many times, he will bring forth healing, the future will be better, and that I will always be a child of God. By His Grace, I have been given the gift of tongues and gift of visions, for which I am grateful for.

So many critical decisions to make. I can't make them, for I can't bear the responsibility if something goes wrong.

So I'm crying out to God, in prayer.

Dear Father,
I need you. I acknowledged I have sinned against you for trying overly hard to direct my own life, without resting in your providence. I thank you that you have forgiven my sins through Christ's death on the cross for me. I now invite Christ to again take His place on the throne of my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as you commanded me to be filled, and as you promised in your Word, that you would do it if i asked in faith. I pray this all in the name of Jesus. As an expression of my faith, I thank you for directing my life and for filling me with the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

“There's a reason we refer to "leaps of faith" - because the decision to consent to any notion of divinity is a mighty jump from the rational over to the unknowable, and I don't care how diligently scholars of every religion will try to sit you down with their stacks of books and prove to you through scripture that their faith is indeed rational; it isn't. If faith were rational, it wouldn't be - by definition - faith. Faith is belief in what you cannot see or prove or touch. Faith is walking face-first and full-speed into the dark. If we truly knew all the answers in advance as to the meaning of life and the nature of God and the destiny of our souls, our belief would not be a leap of faith and it would not be a courageous act of humanity; it would just be... a prudent insurance policy.”

Nothing Gold Can Stay
(Robert Frost)

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

Cobwebs

Thursday, October 25th, 2012 23:16
My blog is collecting cobwebs.

It's been so long since I've updated that trying to put any sort of life information here is just downright lame. Too much has happen, and a merciless onslaught of events took over blogging way too easily. Over the past six months, I have

1) Quitted my job as an Editor
2) Gotten a new job. In an educational institution. Major major transition.
3) Detected a lump near my right armpit. Which turned out to be a fishball-sized abscess. Which required going for surgery - on my Birthday - to get it removed. Under full-body (general) anaesthesia.
4) Caught up with an old friend from high school choir
5) Been more resolute in going to church and caregroup
6) Lost a significant amount of weight, due to the surgery. I literally shrank an entire size in clothes. Which resulted in the donation of 1/3 of my wardrobe.
7) Acquired 6 new dresses (one purple, one red, one white/green, one black plain, one black blossom print, one giraffe print), 3 new tops (black, gray, blue), and 2 pairs of shoes
8) Gone to KL to visit my ex-roomate cum close university friend.
9) Cheered the BFF in her quest of jewellery making
10) Eaten murtabak at least 10 times. (Found this place that was so good I kept recommending it to my friends. I should honestly get commission for this)

It's already almost November.

For all of you who made new year's resolutions for 2012, there's two months left to reach your goals :)

The Alchemist

Monday, March 12th, 2012 11:15
passage from The Alchemist...

A camel driver of a caravan talks about 'present'

"I'm alive," he said to the boy, as they ate a bunch of dates one
night, with no fires and no moon. "When I'm eating, that's all I think
about. If I'm on the march, I just concentrate on marching. If I have
to fight, it will be just as good a day to die as any other.

"Because I don't live in either my past or my future. I'm interested
only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present,
you'll be a happy man. You'll see that there is life in the desert,
that there are starts in the heavens, and that tribes men fight
because they are part of the human race. Life will be a party for you,
a grand festival, because life is the moment we're living right now."

On Friday, at work, De asked me to think of a slogan for the convention this year; the theme would be along the lines of mental health and mental wellness. A cliched 'Healthy Body Healthy Mind' thing came to mind (no pun intended), and De went on to explain the difficulty of coming up with an appropriate slogan.

Last year, the convention's theme was on geriatrics and we had an awfully romantic slogan, "Come Grow Old with Me". (It's also the title of a poem by Robert Browning). With the term 'geriatrics' there are synonyms of aging, being old, wisdom, etc. However, this year, the theme of 'mental health' tends to conjure images of psychotic tendencies. MS even suggested that the theme this year be "Come Grow Siao with Me". Ahahah.

So De and I brainstormed, and here's a list of possible slogans generated...

1. Mind Our Business
2. Our Business to Mind
3. Use it or lose it
4. One. Day. At. A. Time
5. Taking the Aches out of life's Caches
6. Behind the Obvious
7. "I think, therefore I am..."
8. We think we Mind
9. It's all in the Mind
10. BRAIN WASHED
11. Fitting square pegs into round holes
12. Train of thoughts: On the right track

(Although at this point, it started to sound like, 'Train of thoughts derailed'. Or 'deranged'. LOL)

And there were more but I forgot them.

My favourite one of the day that was later generated, "Nutcase Today, Fruitcake Tomorrow." I do not think our boss would approve of it. :P

Clearly, a mind is a terrible thing to waste, and a terrible thing when wasted. LOL.

Randomly, this reminds me of a scene from Macbeth...

Macbeth: How does your patient, doctor?
Doctor: Not so sick, my lord, as she is troubled with thick-coming fancies that keep her from rest.
Macbeth: Cure her of that! Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased, pluck from the memory of a rooted sorrow, raze out the written troubles of the brain, and with some sweet oblivious antidote cleanse the stuffed bosom of that perilous stuff which weighs upon her heart?
Doctor: Therein the patient must minister to himself...

Freewill

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 23:23
By Rush.

Nowadays, a lot of songs are on (a) love, (b) lust/sex, or (c) both. Finding a song NOT on such a topic is a real caveat, but today I chanced upon an old favourite. There's even a Wikipedia entry on this song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freewill_(song)

I like this quote from Wikipedia, "The song's lyrics deal with the subject of free will, emphasizing that free will is not a gift but rather a choice; explaining that Man can attempt to evade the fact that he must choose, but that evasion is itself a choice"

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.
A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
'The stars aren't aligned,
Or the gods are malign...'
Blame is better to give than receive.

Chorus:

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them; they weren't born in Lotusland.
All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.

[Chorus]

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.

[Chorus]

Note: Lotus-land is mentioned in 'The Odyssey', whereby Odysseus goes to the land of Lotus-eaters. The folks there hang out and eat lotus petals, and are perfectly happy but completely brainless.

Damn I love my literature background. Muahahaha.

2011 was a year of many adjustments. (Those who know me well will understand this phrase well enough). Here's the transformations experienced this year...

Career growth

2010 was a dead year, with endless job applications and zero result. The decision to quit Norway and move to Singapore/Malaysia in 2011 greatly turned this situation around. I landed a great job which I liked and blessed me with good working experience.

The 2012 goal will be to take on more responsibilities at work. And be more accurate in my copyediting.

Friendships

In 2010, my quest to make new friends in Norway was near dismal. Social interaction was limited to talking with the bff on gmail chat and random skype dates here and there. It was not an experience I'd want to repeat.

Highlight for 2011: I still love my girls in Canada, and nothing can ever replace them. When I heard that Jen + JC were going to tie the know, a decision was made to fly all the way from Singapore to Canada to attend their wedding. One of the best choices I've made this year - it was a good holiday, a shopping fiesta, a reunion, a nostalgic trip down memory lane and an awesome wedding all rolled into one. And I actually finished my aeroplan miles when I redeemed for that long-distance plane ticket. LOL.

Old friendships were revived: seeing my bff on a regular basis was pure joy, and so was meeting up with high school friends. Makes you realise that it was 10 years since you graduated from the O Levels!

Apart from that, I also made many new friends in Singapore - mostly from the lifegroup at church. I was so blessed to have a lifegroup which comprised mainly of Malaysians working in Singapore, too! Being able to fellowship with other Christians on a regular basis also improved spiritual growth, which leads to...

Spiritual Matters

2010 saw the wheels of forgiveness in action. Letting go of a lot of past and starting anew. This may seem small but it was a crucial step in laying the foundation for a walk with God.

There was multiple spiritual breakthrough in 2011: better understanding of grace (especially grace vs law), repentance, drawing closer to god, prayer and fasting, more prayer for other people instead of myself, and understanding the need for evangelism.

There's much to be desired in this department, however. Regular devotional habits need to take place. Also, currently, I mainly read the bible and pray only on the MRT on the way to work. Such actions, i tend to justify with the lack of time. But this means that I'm only giving God what is convenient. HE has to come first, in all matters, and be given the best, not a convenient time slot.

(Time to replace the MRT bible with a Nintendo DS. :P )

Family

Relationship improved with my mother and first brother beyond my imagination. This i attribute to the grace of God, who has the power to heal all brokenness. I also started giving $$ to my father and aunt, and since then they started to see me in a different light. More respect, less nagging, more personal autonomy and more say in household matters.

The marriage, however, went downhill. Being on long-distance, although necessary for sanity (and it allowed growth for all these other areas), made it hard to sustain. We're still trying. Hopefully as soon as the hubby finishes his PhD, the long distance will end and things would get better. Our vows "for better or worse" have never been more relevant.

Others

Health things: Got a gym membership. I workout regularly now, and I feel better, too. During the University days I used to dance salsa intensely at least 3 times a week, in addition to the random swimming and long-walks. Having an office job makes it so easy to have a sedentary life, so I try to combat it by going for my gym's classes at least 3-4 times a week.

And I developed a newfound love for Yoga. Hehehe.

Habits: Sadly, I stopped cooking. There was no motivation to cook just for one person.

Here's wishing a blessed-filled year for 2012, greater breakthroughs on personal fronts, improved career, family, relational and spiritual aspects, and for a wonderful year ahead!

By Brian McFadden... A touching song I heard.

Did I hear you right
'Cause I thought you said
Let's think it over

You have been my life
And I never planned
Growing old without you

Shadows bleeding through the light
Where a love once shined so bright
Came without a reason

Don't let go on us tonight
Love's not always black and white
Haven't I always loved you?

But when I need you
You're almost here
And I know that's
Not enough
But when I'm with you
I'm close to tears
'Cause you're only almost here

I would change the world
If I had a chance
Oh won't you let me

Treat me like a child
Throw your arms around me
Please protect me

Bruised and battered by your words
Dazed and shattered how it hurts
Haven't I always loved you

But when I need you
You're almost here
And I know that's
Not enough
But when I'm with you
I'm close to tears
'Cause you're only almost here

Bruised and battered by your words
Dazed and shattered now it hurts
Haven't I always loved you

But when I need you, you're almost here
(Well I never knew how far behind I'd left you)
And when I hold you, you're almost here
(Well I'm sorry that I took our love for granted)
(Now I'm with you, I'm close to tears
'Cause I know I'm almost here)
Only almost here

"He has made everything beautiful in its time..."

The last 15 days were a daze. Spiritual crisis and loggerheads with God. Repeated emo + heated arguments with two people close to me, out of which one described me as 'dropping nukes'. 20 ++ Christmas cards jammed up the office printer, and each Season's Greeting card greeted me with the typical idiotic blinking red light. A fever + flu + cough epidemic swept across the cubicles at work before hitting my table. My grandma's now in JB and staying with the mom - who for some reason is being difficult by ignoring my messages and attempts to arrange visits to grandma. An outing with four ex-classmates cancelled for the second? third? time, and it's been delayed more than a month already.

Life ain't rosy for those around me either; the bff's mother drives her up the wall almost every damn day, the hubby went deaf in one ear, and my aunty underwent an eye operation to fix some black spots in her visual field.

And today, I had my period. The painful, agonizing, bleed-till-you-black-out sort. FML.

To numb the emotional roller coaster, today, after a long, long, day at work, I gave up on the gym and took the MRT to the Esplanade instead. And headed straight for the Haagen-daaz ice cream store.

Heavenly was the smooth indulgence of bitter-sweet Green Tea haagen-daaz ice cold goodness in a waffle cone. Totally worth every cent of the SGD $6.70 paid upfront.

At the Esplanade, known for free music performances in the evenings, there was a cute young singer today ready to bare his soul to the awaiting audience. With the ice cream in hand I lazed on a triangle-shaped seat against the wall and the non-musical world was no more.

Almost prophetically, the suave young man belted out in a sweet mid-falsetto, Let it Be, by the Beatles...

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

It was almost as if God was reminding me, "Worry not about your troubles, for I am in control of your circumstances. Whatever unsettles your mind, give it up to me, and taken care of those matters will be..."

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be...

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Came across an old song. One of my high school favourites. This song makes me happy, sad, and completely breaks my heart at the same time.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y04Ph6D0kTw for video.

(On the side, I saw the following comment for that youtube video, and while I was amazed I understood every word, it also totally made my heart go AWWWWWWW:

min elskede, jeg elsker deg av hele mitt hjerte. jeg vil aldri glemme alt vi hadde sammen. jeg vil aldri glemme. jeg elsker deg and i'll keep that promise till the day i die  </3 hvis vare du ville elske meg tilbake...)

Translate: My love, I love you with all my heart. I will never forget everything we had together. I will never forget. I love you and I'll keep that promise till the day i die  </3 if only you will love me back...

---------------------
Have You Ever
---------------------

Chorus:
Have you ever loved somebody so much
It makes you cry
Have you ever needed something so bad
You can't sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words
But they don't come out right
Have you ever, have you ever

Have you ever been in love
Been in love so bad
You'd do anything to make them understand
Have you ever had someone steal your heart away
You'd give anything to make them feel the same
Have you ever searched for words to get you in their heart
But you don't know what to say
And you don't know where to start

[Chorus]

Have you ever found the one
You've dreamed of all of your life
Just about anything to look into their eyes
Have you finally found the one you've given your heart to
Only to find that one won't give their heart to you
Have you ever closed your eyes and
Dreamed that they were there
And all you can do is wait for the day when they will care

[Chorus]

What do I gotta do to get you in my arms baby
What do I gotta say to get your heart
To make you understand how I need you next to me
Gotta get you in my world
Cause baby I can't sleep

Have you ever loved somebody so much
It makes you cry
Have you ever needed something so bad
You can't sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words
But they don't come out right
Have you ever, have you ever.......

---------------

It's one of those songs that REALLY do make you cry. A classic breakup song that you put on repeat when your heart has been broken.

It used to remind me of my first breakup. (The kind that you fall crazily in love and think it'll last forever and since the day it was over you've been a cynic type). These days, it reminds me of the hubby - a good 7-hour time zone difference away.

Thanks, Brandy, for delivering the music with such powerful emotion.

I'm with all those people out there who say how this song so appropriately describe their love lives.

Yes, I am a sucker for sappy love songs.

I really should blog more often.

Ever since the final year of University, I've stopped reading and writing for fun/just for the heck of it. Books and self-composed poems were quickly replaced with Research articles and an endless stream of thesis/reports/proposals/funding applications. My undergrad and Masters' years came and went. And then I was stuck with writing cover letters and resumes. The kind that aims to sells yourself on paper.

And now, I get paid to read. And edit other people's research reports.

It's hard to pick up a good book at the end of the day, or get into the mood to write anymore, when you've ALREADY spent a whole day doing it.

Four months ago I bought that book 'Eat Pray Love' (Or was it Love Pray Eat? Pray Eat Love? Eat Love Pray?). It's sitting on my shelf collecting dust; yet I could easily read it in a day if I just set aside the time for it.

I even stopped collecting quotes on life and love. This made me really sad. Even at a young age I was sensitive to language, and Quotations on life often touched me in a way the real world never could. There were sayings that expressed thoughts when I couldn't find the words. Truths of both an accordant and discordant nature. Puns. Sarcasm. Irony. The kind that gives you mental orgasms. Even Ludwig Wittgenstein said, "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world."

(Heck, sometimes what I read is more real than the real world anyway.)

Yet, today, why do I read or write no more except for the most practical purposes? Why did I stop collecting quotes?

Was it because as I grew older human existence started to make more sense and I didn't need to rely on words to explain things anymore? Because I stopped dating, got married, got a 9-6 desk job and the routine kicked all the inspiration out of my life? Because I already am so much more established compared to my student days, and I'm less questioning about an uncertain future? Or was it because I found God and experienced a newfound meaning that surpassed what even the most eloquent writings could give?

Either way, the earnestness to revel in the joy that language can give - has evaporated.

Honestly, I think it all comes down to cynicism. I'm caught up in some kind of cynical cycle; earning to spend, spending to earn, going to the gym as much as I can and alienating myself in a monotonous routine. Sometimes I tell myself I had dreams - to buy a house (until inflation kicked in), have a fulfilling career (am working on it!), to get married (is it really a dream? Or another facet of reality?), among others. But those moments are getting far and fewer between.

(Yes, at some point, God came in, I gained an eternal perspective, and a lot of my dreams became less focused on the physical world - but that's another story in itself).

I need to break out of this. Tell myself the routine will not last forever. Things will change, even if the transformations are slow. The deeply seated cynism, pragmatism, and do-it-because-its-practical perspective may look like its permanent, but according to a quote by EM Forster (that I collected long ago), "All strong emotions bring with them the illusion of permanance..."

Perhaps, I still rely on quotes, after all...

Your computer commits suicide.

That was a month ago.

I could only start up with a grey coloured screen. Unable to get into my operating system, I had no computer for personal use outside of work. I could read quick emails during lunchbreak at the office but never had time to properly reply. Screw the use of facebook and blogging outside work hours (Not that I was supposed to do those during work anyway!). The personal emails kept piling.

The 4 year old macbook went kaput with no warning. The speed didn't slow down, the startup time was as fast, and everything ran smoothly until the day it died. I had been reluctant to fix it as it costs a bomb - will cost SGD 120 just to run a diagnostic test to see what's wrong, and replacement of a battery about SGD 250, and the motherboard can go up to SGD 700!

Yet at the same time, I was unwilling to buy a new computer as I was so attached to the old one.

Technology. Can't live with it, can't live without it.

There's a huge loss of pictures, old documents, and data. It was all very upsetting and I did not cope well with it at first. Yet, during this time, strangely, I drew closer to God and took comfort in Him; He reminded me that we cannot take the possessions of this world with us when we die. Perhaps it's similar to Buddhist teachings - everything's an illusion and all soon will pass.

Another unexpected outcome of losing the computer was that I made more trips to the gym. I joined it in August and so far I enjoy the classes the most. I've tried yoga, kickboxing, belly dancing, cardio latino, hip hop, aerobics of all sorts, pilates and stretching exercises. So far, I have failed to lose any weight. But I do notice my body getting more toned and firm, and I am a little less jiggly compared to a few months ago (Things that an office job does to you!). And it keeps my metabolic rate at an all-time sky-high. It's so hard to be as active as i was during University, now that I've got a 9-5 desk job. Trying to keep it up!

Here's something I read today. Off the blog of another. It's so well-said; i'll just copy and paste it here. See original source at http://abrahampenrose.wordpress.com/2011/11/01/7-billion-munchkins/ if you wish.

As the world groans beneath our collective weight, our last hope against overpopulation is….birth control pills and condoms.

A baby unborn is 5000 square kilometres of forest spared, and pristine water uncorrupted. He or she does not pollute the environment with plastic bags, and does not disturb the peaceful rest of dinosaurs converted to oil. This nonexistent being never causes pollution; never drives an animal to extinction. He or she does not add to the traffic jam, nor to the subway.

The nonperson’s homework does not cause grievous injury to trees; the pandas are spared their habitat. Birds can shit on the forest floor instead of a car. A number of fish will be spared life in a bowl, and even more will never be taken to a plate. Several hundred chickens did not get their heads cut off.

Two people die in their old age with a little less joy. Yet the world rejoiced. Not because of anything they did. But something they didn’t do.

A fucking sad reality:

A message from my caregroup leader:

Hello You...

the one welcoming the day and wondering what this weeks holds.

I don't know .

But I'm certain of this - there's One who holds us.

And he promises nothing is impossible for you.

Not that mountain you're facing.

Not that task you're dreading.

Not that decision you're afraid to make.

He may not tell us the details of what's to come.

But he reminds us of what's ours no matter what.

Victory.

A future.

A plan that's as good as He is.

Always.

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" -- Is

When raiding the sushi bar: "Man, we should get a pet goldfish. And name it Sashimi."

After thinking for a moment:  "Or get a pet dog and name it Sausage."

When sharing a slice of cake: "Hey, can you eat this into a shape of a teddy bear?"

Me: *pokes at cake with fork*
Result: "Wow, it DOES look like a teddy bear. With squished legs. It needs a FACE!"
Me: *pokes some more*
Result #2: "Now it's just mutated"..... *cuts a bit of cake, eats*
Me: "Now the ears are gone!"
Her: *eats another cake*

When having an awesome variety of food on the table, "You can totally put the Waffle in the same box as the Sushi, man. You'd just have Sushi-flavoured Waffle. Or Waffle-flavoured Sushi."

While feasting on Teppanyaki Pork: "You know that game Harvest Moon? For some reason you must give the animals four-lettered names. My brother named the cow 'Beef'. It was like, 'Hey Beef, Beef, come hereeeeee'. Man, if we had a five-letter limit, he'd name the cow 'Steak'."

When full and stuffed beyond limit: "I'm so full."
Me, "Okay. Don't tell me tomorrow that you want sushi or sashimi then."
Next morning at 9.15am: "Hey, I want SUSHI!!!"

What i miss the most about Peterborough

Past memories. University days with my dear friends; playing board games, having potlucks, cramming through exam periods together. Familiarity. And the presence of my other half. Wished he could be here again; walking around the nature trails, eating together, and chatting while feeding the ducks at millenia park. I miss you...

On a Pensive Note:

There's so much more to be said and described that merely putting it on a blog post is insufficient. What I truly hope to express cannot be described anyway. Yesterday I found out that one of my dear Professors recently passed away; reinforcing how life can be so fragile and unpredictable. The Prof died of cancer, and the news was hard to stomach as I remembered him as a wonderful teacher who was passionate about poetry and had a gift of sharing that passion with his students. If you have the time, this man will change the way you think about life, even in his death. God bless his soul.

Rest in peace, Professor David Glassco.

I was supposed to arrive about 7pm, Canadian Time, at Pearson airport.

Thanks to the delay however, I ended up there at TWO FRIGGIN' AM instead, due to the following reasons:

(i) Massive delay in Shanghai (transit). Like, 5 hours.

(ii) Instead of flying direct to Toronto after the delay, the plane had to stopover at VANCOUVER. >.<

(iii) At Vancouver, one of the random passengers got lost and the plane had to wait for him.... and even after he was found, the plane had to wait for the sandwiches that were supposed to be delivered as our lunch??? The sandwiches took a whole hour to arrive, and when they DID get here the crew realised they were delivered in a truck that wasn't HIGH enough and couldn't be loaded onto the plane.

By then people were saying, screw the sandwiches, let's just take off.

(iv) The final straw: After landing in Toronto, our baggage got delayed. The control tower DIDN'T KNOW we were arriving, and subsequently didn't prepare a conveyor belt for the passengers' luggage abroad our flight. (Later I learnt from the ladies that my flight details didn't even show up on the arrival flight chart in the international arrival hall. wtf)

ANYWAYS, I AM IN CANADA, WHOOOOO! Special thanks to the two ladies who drove allllllll the way from Greek Town to Pearson to get me in the ungodly hours of the morning as well as the Hot Chocolate I was given later. You ladies are truly godsent~

Funny story on the side:

In Vancouver, when the plane landed there was a change of flight crew. Thanks to the last minute flight changes, i reckoned that Air Canada just grabbed whoever they could find as crew replacements, and bestowed upon the passengers (mostly from Shanghai, China) a predominantly FRENCH-speaking crew. It's as if they just hailed off a bunch of people from Montreal. LOL.

The result: All announcements in the plane came in (i) French (ii) English (iii) Cantonese and (iv) very, very, VERY badly broken Mandarin. LOLz.

And of course, I ended up as an English-Chinese translator for the 6 or 7 people seated around my area.

LOL moment of the day: French strewardress asked what I wanted to drink... in French. Yeap i had no idea what words she said but it was pretty obvious. I replied 'juice' and she asked what kind. My most awesome reply,

"JE SU UN ANANAS"

(Translated: I am a pineapple)

I meant to say "Je veux d'ananas" (I want pineapple). LOLOLOLOL.

P.S.
I made strawberry-crasin-walnut muffins. They're in the oven now and will pop out in a few mins. The house smells heavenly of baked fruits and cinnamon. :D :D :D :D :D
... and due to a godforsaken flight delay, i'm stuck in Shanghai for an indeterminate amount of time. pfffft.

Estimated delay is 3 hours. But they can't confirm. Sigh.

Thank you, Air Canada. After my efforts to try and reach Toronto by Sat evening so I could be with the ladies~

After pulling an all nighter at Changi.

I've been awake for at least the past 36 hours (working Friday morning, Friday night at airport, Sat morning flying to Shanghai + wasting time being delayed). There's about 15 more hours of flight to go from Shanghai to North America. @#$%^&!!!

Nevermind that I may reach Pearson waaay too late; after all public transport stop running (except the hilariously expensive taxi).

Sigh.

It was one of those days whereby Dad, in his increasingly old age, was grousing about the unpredictability in life. He recalled the Singapore Airlines' accident in Taipei. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Airlines_Flight_006

Now, SIA has prided itself on being one of the safest, best-customer-serviced and well-reputed airlines globally. The news shocked Asia cause well, obviously, no one foresaw it happening. After all, "It's SINGAPORE AIRLINES, man! Not some random seedy company from India or Indonesia or East Timor which may have substandard safety!"

Apologies to readers from those countries, I'm just quoting my Dad. He's basically saying that everything we knew about SIA shattered in an instant.

Now, Dad was a lil' more affected than the average news-reader out there for a good reason: His friend's son and daughter-in-law had perished in the crash.

Dad, "It was really unfortunate. My friend's son (grown dude in his 30s) and his wife was originally flying by Malaysian Airlines. And the father, who is my friend, didn't like it. He insisted that Malaysian Airlines wasn't safe, and the customer service poor. He worried for the safety and comfort of his son. So he changed his son's flight to Singapore Airlines. And that same place crashed in Taipei."

Me, "Ouch. That's horrible."

Dad, "My friend felt really terrible for a long time. Of course it's no one's fault, but he really regretted it. You know, he was such a good son. Had a good business running, was earning a lot of money, was filial to his parents, and had such a nice lovely wife, and she was pregnant! It's such a big waste. Life is so unpredictable and sometimes, you know, and i......"

I let my dad ramble on. My thoughts were caught dead with a few words.

"He was such a good son"

"It's such a big waste"

I wondered, what if this young man - blessed be his soul - wasn't a "good son", in the typical societal/Malaysian-Chinese sense of the world? Would his death have been any less devastating? Would his parents mourn any less? If he had been a "bad" son or even an "average" son, would it have mattered in the first place?

Apparently my Dad seems to think so. Like a lot of typical Chinese parents, the departure of a 'model' child with talent (i.e. money-generating skills) is far sadder than a regular/below-average kid who didn't "make it" out there.

What if he had been the son of a hawker? In some ways, wouldn't the loss be greater since those who have less value what they have even more? But yet saying that would imply that poverty makes misers out of us, and that wealth makes us indifferent to humanity.

What if the deceased was disabled, or mentally challenged, or suffering from debilitating  physical or psychological issues? Would people be glad to see them gone?

Why do we have so much value judgements? (The fact that I'm blogging about this shows that even this kind of thinking is somewhat ingrained in my head, even if only subconsciously. Gah!)

(Side note on Christian perspectives: Clearly, what we humans value are different from what God values. I need to seek Him more, and not the approval of the world. Seeing the world may be depressing or disappointing. It is vital, that we are able to see our place in God's eyes)

In sparkly electric deep blue.

And sheen-satin-sheer purple.

And overly-shiny dark-and-penetrating pink.

Ooo.

Though it ain't a public holiday in Singapore, though i'd still brave through the Friday night traffic jam across the causeway, though I don't get poutine or Canadian beer, i still want to say,

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!

This post is dedicated to all my friends in Canada. I love ya' all~

...to a baby Asian-looking (duh) girl with large eyes. Everyone adored her and I preciously carried her, showing her off to friends and family.

And suddenly, when I looked at the child in my arms, the baby appeared with - surprise - curly blonde hair and blue eyes. She had also morphed into a 'he'. My dream self said, "hey, since when did you became a Norwegian, kiddo?"

But it didn't matter. He/She was still my baby. So i continued carrying him/her around my town, letting my neighbours admire the baby's cuteness.

And then the baby had red hair and brown eyes. I said, "Oh, you've decided to be Canadian now, EH?"

I can't remember the rest of the feature-morphing, although at one point the kid shrank to the size of my palm (happened when i showed it to some ex-students I tutored at Trent), and eventually, it became the cute Asian baby girl with large eyes again...

At that point, my bff, Drel, (who suddenly appeared in the dream. Don't ask why) she remarked, "Hey, nel, this kid looks awfully like you!"

I turned, glanced at the child, and somehow her face was slightly altered - she DID look exactly like I did in pictures when I was less than a year old.

Then, Drel and I had a really strange conversation.

Me, "Hey, Drel,  you know what? I don't remember giving birth!"

Drel, "Of course you don't. You totally passed out just before labour!"

Me, "???"

Drel, "You fainted. The doctors did a C-section on you. You were passed out three whole days after that, too!"

Me, *scrambles to find the C-section scar, but couldn't find any*

So I said to Drel, "Man, this must be LAPAROSCOPIC or KEYHOLE surgery!"

LOLOLOLOL. .

Clearly, I have been reading and editing too many articles of late. Bwahahahaha~

(Aside from that, I do not think it is humanly possible to have a nationality-changing, gender-shifting kid)

A moment of 'missing you' sometimes comes suddenly, like when I realised that I have been conditioned to feel like sweets when I don't get that in return, or when I heard that a friend from Canada may come to visit Singapore while I'm there and that leads me to all the wonderful memories we have from Canada. Or when I all of a sudden realise that a song that I used to hear from childhood can be given interpretation - that the song is about a person like you. I miss you very much. Looking forward to coming to Singapore...

The past two (or three?) weeks swept by pretty quickly. This is the joy of being employed; time just whooshes by you. Before I already knew it, it’s June – halfway through 2011. Whoo.

For the last two weeks of May I bunked in with my Indian Collegue S, the reasons being (i) Her husband had gone on a work-related trip to the UK and S didn’t want to be alone, and (ii) staying with her would save me some commuting (actually, A LOT of commuting) across the causeway. The two weeks was great – during that time, I’ve gone to Mustafa Center in Little India, had some cooking adventures (made rice pudding, Japanese korokke, pasta), and went on a movie + dinner + strolling by the Esplanade outing.

I’ve also had the most vegetarian curry-intensive meals in such a short time. A typical week’s lunch would look something like this:

Monday: cauliflower curry + chapatti

Tuesday: pea curry + chapatti

Wednesday: potato curry + chapatti

Thursday: eggplant curry + chapatti

Friday: spinach curry + chapatti.

See the pattern? LOL.

While everything was going well, an insane illness - for the first time in more than a whole year – invaded my body and I went kaputs. Those who know me well can testify that I very seldom fall sick, but once I DO get sick, I get afflicted with a long, drawn-out illness whereby the symptoms last a few weeks. This time, it’s high fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, diarrhea, and a splitting headache which came down on me all at once.

S tried to nurse me with some traditional Indian remedies (tumeric in milk, anyone?) which helped, but at the same time she saw nothing wrong with taking curry while having a fever and sore throat – can someone clarify if it’s a Chinese medicine mentality that I’m having? Is it really OK to take curry while in such a state?

Apparently, my body is exhausted. Commuting between Malaysia and Singapore for more than three consecutive months had taken its’ toll, and the moment I get a chance to rest I completely crashed. The illness wrecked havoc on my immunity – it was hard to sit or lie down comfortably, and for some reason I was in great pain. Ngggn. Ordered from the doctor to sleep as much as humanly possible, and armed with a 3-day MC, I headed straight back to JB and camped out at my Mom’s place for the 3 MC days + weekend (which translated into a good five days off from work). A significant portion of the time there was spent sleeping, and the hours I had awake were also mostly spent in bed either crying my heart out or whining lucidly in pain.

During this period, I missed the hubby terribly. Found myself yearning for his gentleness, his sweet assuring words that everything will be okay, and craved for his healing ginger soup (which inevitably resulted in even more crying). Usually I’m OK being alone, but at my weakest and most vulnerable, sleeping in Mom’s queen-sized guest bed by myself never felt so lonely. Was the bed ever that big? Seeing the two pillows sitting side-by-side made the bed feel even more empty…

(And I overdosed myself with Strepsils. LOL)

By Sunday the fever had gone, but the runny nose and coughing still prevailed. Sigh.

On the side, some noteworthy things to mention:

(i) The probation period on my job is over. And I didn’t get fired! Yay!

(ii) I have found a place to stay in Singapore.

(iii) My close friend’s wedding is in August 20th in Canada – I applied for leave, the boss approved my leave, and I got an air ticket to Canada!!!

(iv) I have to apply for a visa to Canada. Damn I hate paperwork involving immigration Canada; it’s only slightly better than the U.S.

(Do not read if unable to accept anything positive about Christianity. Do not read if you're one of those argumentative types who insist that this-is-not-God-it-is-other-things. Well... actually, you may be right and I may be wrong. But what i really mean is, do not approach this blog post if you're bent on debunking God.)

My walk with God has recently involved lots of prayer sessions (mostly in tongues). Perhaps it's time to document some of my thoughts.

Sometimes I fail to find the words myself; so perhaps letting another person tell his story of a struggle is the way to go. An example of worldly things that humans struggle with: a sad yet hopeful story (see link):

http://www.scribd.com/doc/299378/Why-Christian-Pastors-Commit-Adultery-The-True-Story-of-One-Mans-Struggle-With-Lust

----------------------------------------------------
Some personal thoughts of my own that i'll throw in (Please read the above link FIRST before reading my analysis or the breakdown of my thought process below. Seriously):
-----------------------------------------------------

Humans possess their own versions of 'idols'. Thousands of years ago it was all the 'false Gods' which presumably lead to witch burnings and practices of human sacrifice, etc. Today the picture is less obvious; 'false gods' or 'idols' still exist - but in the form of things we worship - money, status, food, pleasure, security.

All are things that are not sustainable.

Unfortunately, when we worship those things of this world, we start becoming like those idols, and chasing after worldly needs. Letting worldly desires (or idolatry) permeate and dominate our lives.

As we walk towards these wordly things, we walk away from God. We tell ourselves 'it's okay, He is full of Grace, God will forgive us' - but it's not about God's rules or things the Church demands from her believers.

It's about reaping the consequences of a life preoccupied with such things.

Perhaps sometimes, the problem isn't the sin itself, or selfishness, or the chasing of money/status/lust/other worldly desires. The problem is that when other unsustainable things become a priority, in the process, we end up not focused on God and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Worshipping the wrong things in this world distances us from God, thus denying ourselves true peace.

Sin isn't about doing what's wrong or unjust. It isn't even about morals or ethics (Hell, Morals and Ethics can be kind of debatable anyway). Rather, Sin is a rebellion against God; it is a rebellion against what God ordained as right and true.

The problem with humans is perhaps, maybe after sinning, we do not approach God with TRUE repentance (i.e. turning away from old habits). We go to God hoping that he'd take away our guilt and solve the problem.

In other words, people don't confess their sins in a spirit of brokenness which truly acknowledge that they have rebelled against God. They merely go to God saying that they're sorry/apologetic for the unforthcoming circumstances they've found themselves in.

A fatal absence of 'Godly sorrow'. Yet fullness of 'Worldly Sorrow' for the shit they got. (I know i'm guilty of it; the only real difference between me and other people is that I've got the guts to admit it. Hah). Think the verse from 2 Corinthians 7:10, "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but wordly sorrow brings death."

With wordly sorrow, naturally, as time passes, the guilt goes away, and the bad habits all kick in again. The failure to grieve because of One's rebellion towards God (or rather, sin) is a failure to admit that there was severe poverty in the Spirit.

Perhaps sometimes, even just saying, "God, I'm a truly broken man, a sinner, and I need YOU in my life" is the way to go.

-------------------

Which brings me to another point: Freedom in living.

What's really TRUE freedom? Many people can tell me it's something about human rights - the right to live, right to eat, right to sleep, right to live your life the way you want to. The right to CHOOSE your life. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Hell, during my University days, I learnt a lot about human rights and our responsibility to fight for them. After all it's hard to be free if our rights - to resources, education, employment, fair treatment, etc - are violated. (Actually, these so-called 'rights' I'm referring to are sovereignties, but let's not argue about the definition for now)

But... I don't know. What happens when we live our lives thinking that we're absolutely entitled to all these rights? And, what happens when one of those rights become the very thing that enslave us?

Take for example, someone says, "I have the right to smoke" and he starts smoking a few stick a day. Inevitably addiction would kick in; soon he'll be smoking a whole packet a day, two packets a day, perhaps more. But hey, it's his right to do whatever he wants, isn't it?

He will have a RIGHT.... but will he be FREE? In smoking, he becomes controlled by the bad habit of addiction. That doesn't sound like the freedom to do as you please anymore.

Or the love of money. Hoard it and you worry that it will get lost/stolen/made in wrong investments. Live in an expensive house and worry that you will get robbed. Earn a bit more and your sense of self-worth increases, earn less and you feel like shit. Give more to your parents and they think they love you more, give less and they doubt your love. We're all free to earn money as we deem fit. And get as much of it as possible. But are we FREE in our hearts, FREE in our spirit, in doing so?

It's the same with other bad habits of any sort - if we keep thinking that I want to steal/lie/cheat/watch porn/be emotional/hate somebody/indulge in wordly desires, we're going to be controlled by these bad habits. We're going to be enslaved by these things. It may seem strange to the world, but perhaps the only way to be free is to surrender our rights and personal desires to God. Kind of like what Jesus did - HE had the right to live, sleep, fait treatment, marry, own property, earn money, be respected, be loved. And he gave up all of it to fulfill God's greater plan in building His Heavenly Kingdom.

True freedom, i think, is like flying a kite; reign it in with the strings and the kite will soar, cut the strings off and it will fall. Such freedom is the freedom found in slaves who joyfully serve, in leaders who exalt their men/women above themselves, and in those caught in unforthcoming circumstances but still praise God with no reservations.

A life that walks very closely with God is insanely hard to keep to. But it is a life that is free from the bondage of Sin.

Something to think about.

Note: I may not express myself very well for some of the points mentioned above. If I've said something that can be interepreted in more than one way, and if one of the ways offends you, I meant the other one.

...the power of the marriage bond.

Came to me as a huge shock. So many little things... which I dearly miss. Things i did NOT expect to miss.

Socks on the floor. Packing leftover dinner for the next day's bento. Baileys vs Beer. Hanging laundry. Walking to the grocery shop to buy organic milk. Baking muffins. Or Cookies. Peeling grapefruits. Morning hugs. The hugs after your work. Watching CSI. Roasting vegetables. Naming the pillow myuk. Knittings. Post-it notes on the toilet seat. Strolling by Aker Brygge. Ice skating. Pizza at Brugata. Getting the cheeks pinched. Drooling over organic soap products at Body Shop. Flat feet jokes. Asking if I remember my keys/cards/phone/transport card before leaving the house. Losing my keys/cards/phone/transport card in random jacket pockets. Cooking surprise food. You washing the dishes after I cook. Playing baseball. Sharing chocolates. Being paralyzed after a fight. Recycling paper and plastic bottles and beer cans. Making pancakes during the weekends. Going for evening runs. Cafe chats. Growing vegetables.

The little things. The routine things. The comforts and emotional security of that routine. Small little events, but life-defining. Insanely bonding.

The truth is, no matter how hard or difficult life gets, when two people are married, they end up giving up a large part of their lives to each other (whether they like it or not!). To severe that bond - good or bad - would be like ripping flesh apart. The bond is so powerful; any attempt to destroy it would destroy the couple itself.

It is a bond that I have severely underestimated...

Moral of the story (subjective to opinions of people):
1) Do not marry when you're unsure
2) Do not marry under pressure (especially parental pressure)
3) Do not marry BEFORE you've figured out what you want to do with your life. And WHERE in the world you want to live in.

In short, do not marry if there is hesitation of ANY sort. And do not marry when under 25 years of age.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/jun/14/polly-vernon-childlessness-cameron-diaz-babies

The world automatically assumes that kids come naturally after marriage. I'd say to them: marriage is one thing, and kids is an entirely different thing.

To all women out there who experience great pressure to have kids, I feel ya, I really do. I've had countless moments when friends, relatives and even strangers come up and ask "When is your turn?" and get taken aback when I tell them, "I never want children." Their faces fall, as if to say, how DARE she have the AUDACITY to deny the chance of motherhood!

And the next question that follows will always be, "What about your husband? Doesn't HE want kids?"

Sigh.

Thank you, World. Don't you know that most of the responsibility of caring for kids are still primarily the women's responsibility? How often do men think about childcare? Or readily give up their career to care for their offspring? Or even CONSIDER how to balance their families and career? In my own sad experience, men can only think of how much fun it is to play with the child - perhaps with an occasional bottlefeed or diaper change. It's the woman who will bear the burden of pregnancy + giving birth + taking care of it. Even if the father DOES want to be involved, few of them want to deal with the day-to-day responsibility of how much hard work it is. For most guys I know, having their precious sleep disturbed by a wailing baby would be more than enough hardship to bear.

Just like when I lived in Norway. The statements the world threw in my face - OF COUSRE I'd give up my life and career and everything to be a housewife there. OF COURSE i was lucky to be able to live in Europe (nevermind maladjustment issues). OF COURSE i was blessed that I didn't NEED to work cause the hubby was earning enough. OF COURSE I should stick around with him if i cared for him. OF COURSE. No one questions anything when a woman sacrifices for a man.

And then I left him to have my own life in Singapore/Malaysia. And I faced immense opposition. HOW DARE SHE abandon her husband and leave the poor fella alone in Norway? HOW DARE SHE desire her own career. HOW DARE SHE want her own life! HOW DARE SHE not support the man she married! HOW can she NOT sacrifice for him? HOW DARE SHE be so selfish!

You know, world, if a woman stays at home and takes cares of the kids, she's a wife/mother. If a man does that, he's a bloody saint.

If a man goes abroad to work (while leaving his wife and kids behind), he's earning a living + providing for them. If a woman does that, she's abandoning her family.

Of course, with increasing equality in gender roles worldwide (although much is still left to be desired), a lot of men are feeling that the world's starting to get dominated by women.

It's like, at the very juncture women lay footprints on the wet concrete of human history and start making great strides - the moment they stopped consulting men before coming to their own decisions - that's when the men start to panic. They start to feel that they're 'losing out' to girl power/the feminist movement and what-not. Sigh. You'd think that with dudes feeling that way, they'd gain some understading of what dudettes have been through and appreciate how hard we've fought for a desire to be EQUAL. Yet men still somehow believe that they are deserving of unconditional power and that they're #1 in society just because they've got a damn penis between their legs.

To all the men out there: When you start to feel completely alienated, marginalized, and rejected by society, welcome to the lives of your female counterparts.
